Why alcohol is bad
From a Jain point of view, alcohol (madya) is bad mainly because it harms both spiritual life and practical life.
- It makes the mind impure and weak
- Alcohol clouds the mind, reduces awareness, and weakens self‑control. - Jain dharma aims for full awareness (jagruti), samyam (self‑restraint), and shuddhi (inner purity). Intoxication goes directly against this. - When the mind is dull, it becomes easier to lie, hurt others, behave irresponsibly, or break vows.
- It leads to himsa (violence) and bad karma
- Under the influence of alcohol, people often hurt themselves or others – through anger, accidents, fights, careless driving, etc. - This creates strong paap (sinful) karma. - Even the production of alcohol involves fermentation that kills countless microscopic jivas (living beings), which also increases himsa. - It blocks spiritual progress
- Jain shastras stress that for samyak darshan (right faith) and samyak jnana (right knowledge), the mind must be clear and steady, not intoxicated. - Alcohol increases passions like anger, greed, pride, and attachment – exactly what we try to reduce through pratikraman, dhyan, and vows. - Therefore both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions strictly forbid intoxicants for anyone serious about dharma. - It goes against Jain vows
- Ahimsa: increases chances of harming living beings. - Satya: people easily lie or speak harshly when drunk. - Brahmacharya: intoxication often leads to uncontrolled sensual behaviour. - Aparigraha: alcohol is an unnecessary indulgence, not a need. - For this reason, it is clearly kept out of a Jain lifestyle. - Everyday point of view (even outside religion)
- It can damage health (liver, brain, heart). - It can spoil relationships and family life. - It can waste money and time. - It easily becomes a habit or addiction.
In short: Alcohol is bad because it destroys clarity, self‑control, and non‑violence – which are the heart of Jain dharma. So Jain teachings advise complete avoidance of alcohol in any form. ( jainknowledge.com)
