    Name of 24 future Tirthankaras

    6 months ago 105

In Jain Dharma, we cannot give an authentic, fixed list of names of 24 future Tirthankaras.

    Why?

    1. Each half time‑cycle (Avasarpini & Utsarpini) has 24 Tirthankaras.

    – Mahavir Bhagwan is the 24th of the present Avasarpini. – In the next Utsarpini, again 24 Tirthankaras will appear.

    1. Jain Agams and main Digambar scriptures do not give a complete, agreed list of the names of all 24 Tirthankaras of the next time‑cycle.

They describe the cosmic law that 24 will definitely come, but do not clearly list all their personal names.

    1. Some later traditions and kathās mention a few future Tirthankars, for example:

    - Many Digambar texts and pravachans mention Padmanabh as the first Tirthankar of the next Utsarpini. - Some Śvetāmbars use the name Mahāpadma in a similar role. - Stories about which jīva (like King Shreṇik, etc.) will become a future Tirthankar are from later literature and pravachan, not from the basic Agams, and are not uniform in all traditions.

    1. Because of this, Jain ācāryas generally do not treat any full “list of 24 future Tirthankaras” as scripturally certain.

Giving a complete set of 24 names would mix firm Jain siddhānta with guesses, which is not proper.

So, according to authentic Jain tradition, we only say:

    • There will definitely be 24 Tirthankaras in every future Utsarpini and Avasarpini.
    • Their exact full list of names for the next cycle is not clearly fixed in the main scriptures, and therefore should not be asserted as final truth.
