i want to break my fast

    12 months ago 132

Shubh bhaav! Here is a simple, traditional way to do parṇā (breaking your fast) with right Jain maryādā.

    1) Set the right time

    • Do parṇā only in daylight. If you had fixed a parṇā-time with your pachkhan, follow that. If not, do it after sunrise and finish well before sunset.
    • End your vow (pachkhan) respectfully before parṇā.

    2) Prepare your mind

    • Sit peacefully, remember Arihant–Siddha–Āchārya–Upādhyāy–Sādhu.
    • Recite Navkar Mantra (at least 3 times) before taking water and again after, with gratitude and ahimsā-bhāvanā.

    3) Start gently with water

    • First take a few sips of warm, previously boiled and filtered water (uchchārit/jivānirjarit as per your maryādā).
    • Use only water boiled within the allowed time of your tradition (commonly within 24 hours; some follow 6–12 hours). Daylight only.

    4) Take light, simple food (sukham parṇā)

    • Begin with very light items: rice water (kanji), thin moong soup, plain soft khichdi, or diluted dal water. Small portions, slow chewing.
    • Avoid fried, sour, very spicy, cold, or heavy foods at the start. Do not overeat.

    5) Right conduct while eating

    • Maintain silence and mindfulness; avoid waste.
    • Use filtered water only. Complete eating before sunset.

    6) After parṇā

    • Bow with “Khamemi Savva Jīvae — Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ.”
    • If possible, do short sāmāyik/reading, and keep maitri-bhāvanā.
    • Offer dān (as you wish) with gratitude.

    Notes on traditions

    • Shvetāmbara and Digambara lay followers both emphasize daylight parṇā, boiled water, and simplicity. Digambara discipline for munis is stricter (before noon), but for householders the above maryādā is commonly followed; timings for boiled water may vary by sangh. When in doubt, follow your local maryādā.

    Health care

    • If the fast was long (2+ days), reintroduce food slowly across the day. Start with water, then thin liquids, then soft solids. If you feel dizziness, rest and proceed gradually.

    Bhavatu sarva maṅgalam.
