Tobacco in paryusan
Tobacco (smoking or chewing) is not allowed during Paryushan/Das‑Lakshan. In Jain Dharma, all intoxicants are to be given up, and tobacco is an intoxicant. Using it:
- Violates ahimsa (it harms oneself and others).
- Breaks self‑restraint (sanyam) and increases attachment (parigraha).
- Disturbs vrata like samayik, pratikraman, upvaas, and the purity expected in this parva.
- Falls under anarth‑dand (needless sin) that a shravak/shravika must avoid.
Shwetambar (8 days, ending on Samvatsari) and Digambar (10 days, Das‑Lakshan ending on Anant Chaturdashi) traditions are united on this point: tobacco should be completely renounced throughout the festival, ideally forever.
Simple guidance for the parva
- Take a firm pachchakkhan (vow): “I renounce tobacco for the entire Paryushan/Das‑Lakshan and beyond.”
- Remove all tobacco products from home; avoid places and company that trigger use.
- If a lapse happens, stop immediately and perform alochana–pratikraman, then renew the vow.
- Keep the mouth clean (water rinses), engage in jaap, swadhyay, and satsang to steady the mind.
