    Day 2 pratikraman

    12 months ago 95

Here is a simple “Day 2 Pratikraman” you can do at home, keeping the traditional Jain vidhi and spirit intact. Today’s focus: carefulness in movement (Iriyāpatha) and universal forgiveness (Kṣamā).

    Preparation (2–3 min)

    • Sit in a clean, quiet place, facing North or East. Wear simple, clean clothes.
    • Calm the breath and recall you are doing pratikraman to repent, purify, and re‑resolve.

    Step-by-step Day 2 sequence (about 20–30 min) 1) Navkār Mantra (2 min)

    • Recite with devotion to invoke the Panch Parameṣṭhi.

    2) Samayik (5–7 min)

    • Take the vow of equanimity (Ichchhāmi samāiyaṁ). Sit steadily, watch the breath, and cultivate sama-bhāva.

    3) Iriyāvahiyā reflection (3–4 min)

    • Reflect on all movement since the last pratikraman: walking, sitting, handling objects, using water/air/earth.
    • Repent any harm caused to even the tiniest life-forms due to carelessness, and resolve to be gentler and slower in movement.

    4) Alochanā on the Anuvrats (5–6 min)

    • Truth, non-stealing, celibacy/chastity, non-violence, non-possessiveness.
    • Honestly admit any lapse in thought, word, or deed. Feel genuine remorse.

    5) Pratyākhyān (2–3 min)

    • Take a small, doable vow for the next 24 hours linked to today’s focus, e.g. “I will walk more mindfully and check the floor before moving chairs” or “I will use a soft light at night to avoid trampling insects.”

    6) Kayotsarga (2–3 min)

    • Stand or sit steady; keep the body still and the mind in the soul’s awareness. Let go of attachment/aversion that led to today’s faults.

    7) Kṣamāpanā – Universal forgiveness (3–4 min)

    • With humility: “Khamemi savva jīva, savve jīvā khamantu me; metti me savvajīvesu, veram majjha na kenai.”
    • Say “Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ” sincerely for all transgressions, known and unknown.

    8) Conclude (1–2 min)

    • Offer vandanā to Arihant–Siddha–Āchārya–Upādhyāya–Sādhu.
    • End in quiet gratitude and keep your pratyākhyān alive through the day.

    Notes on traditions

    • Shvetāmbara: Today’s flow maps to Samayik → Iriyāvahiyā (care in movement) → Alochanā/Pratikraman sutras (e.g., Tassa Uttari) → Kayotsarga → Kṣamāpanā (Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ).
    • Digambara: The essence is the same—Samayik, Alochanā (confession), Pratikraman, Pratyākhyān, Kayotsarga, and Kṣamāpanā—with Guru-vandanā often emphasized at the start. Postures may include standing Kayotsarga.

    Keep it pure and simple

    • No shortcuts in remorse; keep the heart soft and truthful.
    • Let today’s special effort be “carefulness in every step and movement.”
